Opinion
Dear Laura

Dear Laura,
I just found out my girlfriend cheated on me while we were together. She said she wanted to try again and that she was changing. I’m giving her another shot because I honestly do care for her and she has been putting a lot more effort towards me. The problem is I can't let go of the fact she slept with someone else while we were together. How do I deal and get over it?
Sincerely,
Heartbroken
Dear Heartbroken,
You’ve already put yourself in the VERY vulnerable position of going back with her. Obviously you care about her a lot. But trust has been broken and there is the chance she will do it again. You’ll probably never fully get over it, and she’s going to have to be patient with you. You need to keep your emotional distance. Don’t give your whole heart back to her all at once.
Dear Laura,
Back in high school I met this wonderful girl. We were really tight and I really liked her. When she got a boyfriend it was tough for me, but we stayed friends. Then I got a girlfriend and got wrapped up in that and didn’t really talk to her. This girlfriend and I have long since broken up, and now whenever I try to talk to my old friend, she’s kind of cold. How do I re-start communication with her, and not seem that I’m trying to get "with" her? I want my friend back!
Sincerely,
Not Trying to Just Get Laid!.
Dear “Not Trying to ‘Just Get Laid,”
It’s unfortunate that guys and girls being tight friends is never as simple as we like to think it is. Even if it does “seem” simple, there’s usually something very complicated just beneath the surface. In this case, you need to put yourself in this girl’s position. You only showed interest in talking to her again after you and your girlfriend broke up. She probably thinks that once you get a girlfriend again you’re going to do the same thing. The best way to go about this is to find old mutual friends and hang out in a group. Work from there.
Oil spill blues

I’m hoping a little bit of good comes from this now infamous Gulf Coast oil spill, which is expected to keep spewing for weeks.Environmentalism seems to have slowed down, almost coming to a stall in the last few years, with folks growing impatient with the cause.
It’s not easy to keep a fiery opposition to something that you cannot blatantly see the effects of day to day.But an environmental tragedy of this magnitude should remind us that we do have the advanced technology to destroy the Earth, and if we don’t regulate ourselves, that’s what may happen.I’m hoping this serves as a wake up call to everyone who is okay with looking for more ways to drill more oil (in hopes to relieve our dependence on foreign petroleum).
This includes our president, who opened up the possibility of future domestic oil exploration, in addition to nuclear power expansion.I hope this changes President Obama’s mind, at least about oil. He did approve the Cape Wind project — a proposal to build 130 wind turbines off shore near Cape Cod — last week, after it had been hotly debated (for some reason) for nine years.
Whether or not a person even believes in the long term effects fossil fuels have on our planet, it’s silly and inane to block the progression of clean power like wind turbines (way to go Jiminy Peak), hydro-electricity, solar power and geo-thermal. From a purely economic point, let’s remember that the tap-able oil in the earth will inevitably run out. And in those waning days, gas prices will be unimaginable, even to us.
The leaders of clean energy will be the countries that thrive in stride. So why think in such a short-term way as to say that beginning to regulate big-time polluters might cost some jobs immediately. What about the potential for jobs to be created in building and implementing new turbines and solar panels? If there’s any good that comes from this oil spill, it’s that it may serve to get public opinion back on the right track.
Thinking about environmental impact won’t just be an afterthought. Seeing a few clips on the news of large tortoises that could be over a hundred years old, washing up dead should be enough to wake anyone up.
