MCLA Director of Athletics, Scott Nichols, was elected to a Selectman seat in Adams Monday. A previous selectman from 2003-2006, Nichols does not consider himself a politician.“I consider this community service,” he said in an interview last week. “I would not call myself a politician.”When asked about his position at the College, Nichols did not expect it to play much of a role.

“If anything it would be a positive impact,” he said, in an interview before election day. “My position gathers contacts within the community.”Nichols has lived in Adams for 16 years and is happy to live there.

“When I first moved to Adams,” Nichols said to Charlie in the Morning on April 21, “There were three reasons I moved there. It was a family oriented community, it had good school systems, and people took care of the property.”Going through his compaign, Nichols has shown interest in addressing property issues.“There are rental properties with absentee owners, that needs to be addressed,” he said.

Beyond his work at MCLA, Nichols has been serving the community by being active with youth sports leagues.“I have been coaching youth sports for 30 years,” he said. “I’ve coached travel basketball, little league, and Babe Ruth baseball. I will be taking a step back in coaching.”Nichols would like to see more culture in Adams.“Topia Arts has been undergoing a renovation,” he said to Charlie in the Morning. “There have been a couple of performances down there but we would like to see that grow.He would like to see graduates stay around upon their graduation.

“Massachusetts is losing population at this point,” he said. “A number of student athletes have stayed in the area teaching.” Nichols noted that the teenage group is a “moving target.” The park programs have been cut extensively in Adams which keeps kids busy during the summer.

“Adams is very sports oriented community, “Nichols said. “A lot of kids are involved in dance or sports, so there are a lot of adult organized activities to keep the kids out of trouble and busy.”In his free time, Nichols enjoy to play golf and spend time with his family. Nichols ended up winning the election Monday night in Adams and will be serving as a selectman in that community.
