~ City council and Mayor Richard Alcombright recognized retired North Adams police chief Kenneth B. Gamache for his extensive service Tuesday.Gamache, who began his career with the North Adams Police Department in 1952 and became police chief in 1972, was presented a collection of insignia representing his different positions with the city, as well a letter of commendation engraved on a plaque.Escorted by an honor guard of current policemen, Gamache accepted the gift, thanking his family, who turned out in large numbers to fill the seats in the council chamber. “The biggest asset anyone has is their family,” he said.
~ Mayor Alcombright made note of an assertive plan to be unfolded and explained in full in the coming weeks detailing how North Adams will deal and priortize buildings set for demololition. The mayor said he will look to begin selling between 80 and 100 parcels of land that the city owns. It will create less headaches for us, he said, and it will also bring in revenue. “We’re not in the real estate business,” Alcombright added.
~ Mentioning briefly a group of uncashed checks that have been posted on the city’s Web site, Alcombright warned councilors and citizens of a possible fraud scheme someone is already running. “The city will not call you about checks,” he emphatically cautioned.
